Glasgow Prestwick Airport.

Prestwick Airport (PIK) is located about 29 miles from Glasgow. The airport started operations back in 1934 with a passenger terminal opening in 1938. After the war it was used as a diversion airport when Heathrow was closed due to fog. Prestwick Airport is considered to be the only piece of United Kingdom territory that Elvis Presley stood on when the USA plane carrying him home stopped to refuel in 1960, whilst en route from Germany.

History - Prestwick Airport (PIK) is located about 29 miles from Glasgow. The airport started operations back in 1934 with a passenger terminal opening in 1938. After the war it was used as a diversion airport when Heathrow was closed due to fog. Prestwick Airport is considered to be the only piece of United Kingdom territory that Elvis Presley stood on when the USA plane carrying him home stopped to refuel in 1960, whilst en route from Germany.  In 1964 a new runway extension and terminal were opened at the airport. In 1991 ownership passed to the newly privatised BAA. Soon after BAA sold the airport to Infratil. In April 2005, Infratil completed a major £3 million refurbishment of the terminal building. Today the airport has two runways (2,987 meters and 1,829 meters) enabling unrestricted operation of wide- bodied aircraft including B747-400's. Facts - In 2011 Prestwick Airport was the UK’s 20th busiest airport with 1,297,119  passengers using the airport. This was a decrease of 22% on the 1,662,744 passengers that used the airport in 2010. In 2010 the 10 busiest routes were London Stansted, Dublin, Girona, Malaga, Tenerife South, Paris Beavais, Alicante, Palma de Mallorca, Faro and Belfast City.

Smoking – Glasgow Prestwick Airport is a smoke-free airport, in line with the law on smoking in enclosed public spaces in Scotland. This includes the terminal building and railway station at Glasgow Prestwick Airport. Smoking is only allowed in designated areas outside the terminal. Individuals who smoke elsewhere are liable to a fixed penalty fine of £50. Please be aware that once you have passed through security, you will not be able to smoke anywhere in the airport.

Parking - Drivers parking at Prestwick Airport can choose from Terminal Drop Off, Short Stay Car Park, Mid and Long Stay and the Watsons Ayr Park Car Park.
